‘Honors’ at USC… Which Program is Right for me personally?

You’ve come this far—you’ve gotten accepted to USC! I’m certain 1st thing in your concerns now is ways to challenge yourself to the fullest extent throughout your four years as a Trojan. Ok, ok, maybe researching Honors Programs at USC is not the thing that is first your to-do list (you’re busy applying for housing and ordering football tickets, right?) So, we thought we would bring the information for you! Here you will find the details on two honors choices at USC: Freshman Science Honors and Thematic Option.

The Freshman Science Honors Program, or FSH, provides a rigorous yet experience that is personalized first year students within the natural sciences. Instead of taking the typical freshmen year technology courses, FSH students simply take an advanced version of these classes which have both a smaller lecture and discussion section. This fosters a more hands-on experience in labs, more individualized attention from faculty, and a more collaborative environment amongst FSH Scholars. FSH also expands beyond the classroom, supplying possibilities for field trips, guest lectures, etc.

Austin Carter, a sophomore majoring in Biological Sciences, participated in FSH and says he initially applied because he ‘was excited about working together with a smaller group’ and ‘thrives off collaboration.’ He definitely discovered that teamwork through FSH: ‘Through collaborating on labs or studying for tests, our hard work brought us together.’ He also notes that an investigation trip to Catalina ‘offered an opportunity to really get to learn each other not in the classroom setting.’ For more information, including exactly how to apply, please check out make an application for FSH . Please note that the 2013 deadline is April tenth, and to meet the requirements, you have to be a declared natural science major.

Thematic choice, or even TO as it is referred to on campus, is really a system that replaces USC’s General Education curriculum having an interdisciplinary core curriculum. While not a humanities program per say, TO is very learning and writing intensive, so students deciding on this scheduled program should be prepared for this kind of rigor. This program is probably not for you if you don’t LOVE reading and writing. Like FSH, TO provides students by having a smaller learning environment which enables greater discussion amongst pupils and faculty.

Aaron Brown, Associate Director of Admission, took part in TO when he had been a pupil at USC. Aaron says that TO ‘became a way that is great shrink this big institution up to a more manageable size’ and says it supplied him with a great community of like-minded students. Aaron says their favorite TO course had been Core 102 that he took his semester that is first of themed ‘The Hero’s Journey.’ He says one instance that stands apart is whenever class spent a period that is entire just two paragraphs of Heart of Darkness. Aaron says it absolutely was a ‘wow, this is college’ moment for him. Aaron also got a trip to Disneyland out of the experience during his Core 101 shmoop writing service course whenever they were studying Mickey Mouse as a cultural symbol. He notes that as a freshman brand new to LA, ‘these had been invaluable opportunities to explore this great city.’

For more information on how to apply, please visit Applying to Thematic Option . Please note that just admitted pupils meet the criteria to use as well as the due date is 10th april.

These are simply two of the many options students have for pursuing honors at USC. One could also receive departmental honors by completing a thesis that is honors their senior year. Please go to the following links for information on other honors programs at USC: Dornsife Honors Prorgrams, Viterbi Honors, Renaissance Scholars, worldwide Scholars, Discovery Scholars, McNair Scholars, Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship.

Don’t forget that also that you will still be receiving an invigorating and intellectually challenging education at one of the world’s premier research institutions if you do not complete any of the aforementioned programs during your time at USC, rest assured. Fight up on!

I Adore LA!

In the couple that is next, recently admitted pupils, along side big waves of potential students on their spring breaks, will be visiting our campus. We have spent the last couple of months reading thousands of files, we are very excited to meet all of you so we are primed for some student interaction and! While I’m certain that there will be plenty happening on campus, we wanted to highlight several things about this beautiful city that I adore. I have been residing in l . a . for the last 9 years and you can still find things I have not done, but this is usually a personal ‘Must See’ list that I’ve put together for LA visitors. I hope you enjoy!

1) Let’s Take A Ride: For my everyday drive, I just take the Metro Expo Line to the office. Since its opening in Spring 2012, USC students are able to just take this train to Culver City in western Los Angeles or to Downtown. You are invited by me to complete the same! Culver City is really a great spot for restaurants, museums and theaters. If you ride the Expo Line going in the contrary way, you’ll be able to to savor LA Live- home of the Nokia Theatre, the GRAMMY museum and lots of more restaurants. Right door that is next The Staples Center, where the Lakers play ( and some other NBA team that no one caresabout). After that, you can feel free to explore the others of Downtown LA and all sorts of it has to offer! There are three stops near our campus so it is extremely accessible. The fare is cheapand it takes 20 minutes or less getting to either destination. Talk of a great way to avoid traffic!

2) Why see the global world, when you’ve got the BEACH!: I really couldn’t have a ‘Must See’ list about LA without mentioning the coastline! Venice is always popular with this visitors due to all the social people watching you are able to do. I choose less beaches that are crowded Playa or Santa Monica, but whatever you may be in the mood for, you can’t visit Los Angeles without hitting the waves!

3) pay attention!: our favorite thing about Los Angeles is the total amount and variety of live music you can expose you to ultimately. We love going to big concerts at my favorite venue, The Greek Theatre, to look at musicians like Jason Mraz or Phoenix. If I do want to go with one thing more intimate, i could constantly always check out up and coming singer/songwriters at places like area 5 or The Witzend.

4) an increased Rested Place: I had beenn’t going to add restaurants in this post, but this is a new favorite, so I had in order to make an exception. Perch restaurant is a french bistro that is inspired in one’s heart of downtown la. It bears its name mostly you an unobstructed 360 degree view of the city because it sits on a rooftop and gives. I highly suggest taking your household right here for Sunday brunch with some music that is live

5) A Lesson ever sold: Olvera Street may be the part that is oldest for the city. You need to take the Expo Line from campus and then the line that is connecting Union facility. In about half an hour, you are going to find yourself surrounded by historic buildings and a traditional Mexican style plaza with plenty of places to eat and shop. Invest a couple hours appreciating the architectural elegance and studying its traditions.

I hope some of you get to visit some of those accepted places and tell us what you think if you do!
